Dog days, truly dog days

When two Alaskan huskies tore into a chicken coop at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences June 6, mauling and killing more than 20 birds, it set off the latest debate over how to properly care for domesticated pets.

The dogs - whose rabies vaccinations were up to date - were strolling unleashed with their owners through the 1.5 miles of trails that wind through the area when they attacked the animals that were housed on the high school's grounds.

So, in light of the mauling, how should Mount Greenwood residents handle their canine pets?

Keep them unleashed as long as the property is not densely populated

Leash the dogs no matter where they are

Save all that exercising for a designated dog park

Confine their dogs to highly public spaces, such as sidewalks

Keep the dogs in the back yard; that is all the exercise they need
