BAC spring classes begin soon


The Beverly Arts Center School of the Arts spring session begins the week of March 30, offering nearly 150 fine arts classes for preschoolers through seniors in visual arts, dance, music, theater, digital art, movement, and literary arts. Classes are taught at the center at 2407 W. 111th St., and registration is open.

New classes for kids include Painting at the Easel for artists age 10 to 14 with previous art experience who are interested in learning about other artists as they enhance their skills and create their own masterpieces. Also new is Children’s Yoga, which is not only fun for 3- to 5-year-old students, it helps them develop strength and focus.

In the new Computer Animation class, teens are invited to create their own characters and stories, then learn to add sound, movement and abstraction. Students who love Japanese anime can join a new class and Learn to Draw Manga.

Teen performers are invited to try out for places in spring theater productions and music ensembles. Auditions are Sun, Mar. 23 for the Woodwind Ensemble and Brass Ensemble; Sun., Mar. 30 for BAC teen improv comedy troupes; and Mon., Mar. 31 for the Teen Thespians production of Shakespeare’s “A Comedy of Errors.”

everyday items to create unique works of art. Adult ceramics artists are invited to join in the new Make It, Use It class, which focuses on creating handcrafted practical items.

Graphics artist Greg Lochow will teach a new class in how to use InDesign desktop publishing software to create small publications.

The expanded literary arts curriculum will offer Fiction Writing for Young Authors, short story writing for all ages, and a special workshop for teens on preparing grade-A papers, projects and reports.

Music classes for children, teens and adults are offered at several skill levels and in private as well as group lessons. Options include guitar, keyboards, strings, woodwind, brass, drums, voice and bagpipes. Dance classes range from ballet, tap and jazz to Flamenco, African and Hip Hop, and start with pre-dance classes for children age 3. Social dancing classes are taught on Sunday afternoons by May I Have This Dance and include a new ballroom dance class for kids age 8 to 14. Fitness classes are offered in a variety of levels of yoga, Pilates and tai chi.

In addition to class sign up, registration is open for BAC summer camps. Camps offer arts-based, age-appropriate, hands-on activities and classes for children age 3 through teens.

Options include Visual Arts Camps, Day Camps offered in five two-week sessions, Playmakers Summer Theater Camps for ages 5 to 9, and Teen Arts Intensives for ages 13-19. Offered by audition are Playbac Summer Theater Camp for ages 10-14, working on performing “The Wiz;” and Teen Thespians for ages 13-16, working on performing “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”
